«Alla Locanda del Sgr. Moriconi al Largo del Castello»: Goethe’s first Neapolitan address. A corner room with Pompeian arabesques and no fireplace, a brazier and a sailor’s cowl that makes Tischbein laugh. At the end of May, from the same square, Goethe furnishes Kniep’s lodging and drinks to his future.

Under this address, no less cheerful than high-sounding, letters from all the four quarters of heaven will henceforth find us. Round the castle, which lies by the sea, there stretches a large open space, which, although surrounded on all sides with houses, is not called a square or piazza, but a largo, or expanse. Perhaps the name is derived from ancient times, when it was still an open and unenclosed country. Here, in a corner house on one side of the Largo, we have taken up our lodgings in a corner room, which commands a free and lively view of the ever moving surface. An iron balcony runs before several windows, and even round the corner. One would never leave it, if the sharp wind were not extremely cutting.
The room is cheerfully decorated, especially the ceiling, whose arabasques of a hundred compartments bear witness to the proximity of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Now, all this is very well and very fine; but there is no fire-place, no chimney, and yet February exercises even here its rights. I expressed a wish for something to warm me. They brought in a tripod of sufficient height from the ground for one conveniently to hold one’s hands over it; on it was placed a shallow brazier, full of extremely fine charcoal red-hot, but covered smoothly over with ashes. We now found it an advantage to be able to manage this process of domestic economy; we had learned that at Rome. With the ring of a key, from time to time, one cautiously draws away the ashes of the surface, so that a few of the embers may be exposed to the free air. Were you impatiently to stir up the glowing coals, you would no doubt experience for a few moments great warmth, but you would in a short time exhaust the fuel, and then you must pay a certain sum to have the brasier filled again.
I did not feel quite well, and could have wished for more of ease and comfort. A reed matting was all there was to protect one’s feet from the stone floor; skins are not usual. I determined to put on a sailor’s cloak which we had brought with us in fun, and it did me good service, especially when I tied it round my body with the rope of my box. I must have looked very comical, something between a sailor and a capuchin. When Tischbein came back from visiting some of his friends, and found me in this dress, he could not refrain from laughing.

“Alla Locanda del Sgr. Moriconi al Largo del Castello”. Unter dieser ebenso heiter als prächtig klingenden Aufschrift würden uns Briefe aus allen vier Teilen der Welt nunmehr auffinden. In der Gegend des am Meere liegenden großen Kastells erstreckt sich eine große Weitung, die man, obgleich von allen vier Seiten mit Häusern umgeben, nicht Platz, sondern Weite (largo) genannt hat, wahrscheinlicherweise von den ersten Zeiten her, da dieses noch ein unbegrenztes Feld war. Hier nun tritt an der einen Seite ein großes Eckhaus herein, und wir faßten Fuß in einem geräumigen Ecksaale, der einen freien und frohen Überblick über die immer bewegte Fläche gewährt. Ein eiserner Balkon zieht sich außen an mehrern Fenstern vorbei, selbst um die Ecke hin. Man würde davon nicht wegkommen, wenn der scharfe Wind nicht äußerst fühlbar wäre.
Der Saal ist munter dekoriert, besonders aber die Decke, deren Arabesken in hundert Abteilungen schon die Nähe von Pompeji und Herculanum verkünden. Das wäre nun alles schön und gut, aber keine Feuerstätte, kein Kamin ist zu bemerken, und der Februar übt denn doch auch hier seine Rechte. Ich sehnte mich nach einiger Erwärmung.
Man brachte mir einen Dreifuß, von der Erde dergestalt erhöht, daß man die Hände bequem drüber halten konnte. Auf demselben war ein flaches Becken befestigt, dieses enthielt ganz zarte glühende Kohlen, gar glatt mit Asche bedeckt. Hier gilt es nun haushältig sein, wie wir es in Rom schon gelernt. Mit dem Ohr eines Schlüssels zieht man von Zeit zu Zeit die oberflächliche Asche behutsam weg, so daß von den Kohlen wieder etwas an die freie Luft gelange. Wollte man jedoch ungeduldig die Glut aufwühlen, so würde man einen Augenblick größere Wärme spüren, aber sehr bald die ganze Glut erschöpft haben, da denn das Becken abermals gegen Erlegung einer gewissen Summe zu füllen wäre.
Ich befand mich nicht ganz wohl und hätte freilich mehr Bequemlichkeit gewünscht. Eine Schilfmatte diente gegen die Einflüsse des Estrichs; Pelze sind nicht gewöhnlich, und ich entschloß mich, eine Schifferkutte, die wir aus Scherz mitgenommen hatten, anzuziehen, die mir gute Dienste leistete, besonders nachdem ich sie mit einem Kofferstrick um den Leib befestigt hatte, da ich mir denn als Mittelding zwischen Matrosen und Kapuziner sehr komisch vorkommen mußte. Tischbein, der von Besuchen bei Freunden zurückkehrte, konnte sich des Lachens nicht enthalten.

I had set my mind so resolutely on the Roman Corpus Christi Day, and in particular on the tapestry worked from the designs of Raphael which appears on that occasion, that I did not allow those splendid appearances of Nature, though they have not their parallel elsewhere in this world, to divert me from my purpose, but obstinately prosecuted my preparations for departure. A pass was ordered and a vetturino had given me the earnest money, the arrangement in this country for assuring the traveller of his journey, being the reverse of that in our country. Kniep was busy in furnishing his new quarters, which, both in respect of accommodation and situation, were much better than the former.
At an earlier date, when this change was in process, my friend had sometimes suggested to me that it was not agreeable and to a certain extent not becoming to take possession of a house without bringing something with one; a bedstead itself served to infuse some respect into your landlord. To-day, then, as we were going through the endless lumber-heaps of the Castle precincts, I saw a couple of iron frames painted the colour of bronze, which I at once bargained for and handed over to my friend as the basis of a quiet and solid sleeping place. One of the porters you find everywhere to hand brought it with the necessary boards to Kniep’s new premises, which so highly delighted him that he at once meditated removing from me into his new lodging, intent on quickly procuring himself rods, paper and other necessaries. A part of the outlines drawn in the two Sicilies I gave him according to agreement.

Ich hatte das römische Fronleichnamfest und dabei besonders die nach Raffael gewirkten Teppiche so fest in den Sinn gefaßt, daß ich mich alle diese herrlichen Naturerscheinungen, ob sie schon in der Welt ihresgleichen nicht haben können, keineswegs irren ließ, sondern die Anstalten zur Reise hartnäckig fortsetzte. Ein Paß war bestellt, ein Vetturin hatte mir den Mietpfennig gegeben; denn es geschieht dort zur Sicherheit der Reisenden umgekehrt als bei, uns. Kniep war beschäftigt, sein neues Quartier zu beziehen, an Raum und Lage viel besser als das vorige.
Schon früher, als diese Veränderung im Werke war, hatte mir der Freund einigemal zu bedenken gegeben, es sei doch unangenehm und gewissermaßen unanständig, wenn man in ein Haus ziehe und gar nichts mitbringe; selbst ein Bettgestell flöße den Wirtsleuten schon einigen Respekt ein. Als wir nun heute durch den unendlichen Trödel der Kastellweitung hindurchgingen, sah ich so ein paar eiserne Gestelle, bronzeartig angestrichen, welche ich sogleich feilschte und meinem Freund als künftigen Grund zu einer ruhigen und soliden Schlafstätte verehrte. Einer der allezeit fertigen Träger brachte sie nebst den erforderlichen Brettern in das neue Quartier, welche Anstalt Kniepen so sehr freute, daß er sogleich von mir weg und hier einzuziehen gedachte, große Reißbretter, Papier und alles Nötige schnell anzuschaffen besorgt war. Einen Teil der Konturen, in beiden Sizilien gezogen, übergab ich ihm nach unserer Verabredung.

Instead of going home I directed my steps towards the Molo to see the great spectacle from another foreground; but whether from fatigue after such a day’s rich experience, or from a feeling that it would not do to mar the impression of this last splendid picture, I retreated again towards Moriconi, where I found Kniep, who was minded to pay me a visit from the lodging he had just entered. Over a bottle of wine we talked of our future relations, and I could promise him that, as soon as I was able to show any of his works in Germany, he should certainly be recommended to the excellent Duke Ernst of Gotha, whence he would receive orders. And so, with heart-felt mutual joy, we parted from each other with sure outlook on future reciprocal activity.

Anstatt nach Hause zu gehen, richtete ich meine Schritte nach dem Molo, um das große Schauspiel mit einem andern Vordergrund zu sehen; aber ich weiß nicht, ob die Ermüdung nach einem so reichen Tage oder ein Gefühl, daß man das letzte, schöne Bild nicht verwischen müsse, mich wieder nach Moriconi zurückzog, wo ich denn auch Kniepen fand, der aus seinem neu bezognen Quartier mir einen Abendbesuch abstattete. Bei einer Flasche Wein besprachen wir unsere künftigen Verhältnisse; ich konnte ihm zusagen, daß er, sobald ich etwas von seinen Arbeiten in Deutschland vorzeigen könne, gewiß dem trefflichen Herzog Ernst von Gotha empfohlen sein und von dort Bestellungen erhalten würde. Und so schieden wir mit herzlicher Freude, mit sicherer Aussicht künftiger wechselseitig wirkender Tätigkeit.
Today
The Largo del Castello is today’s Piazza Municipio, in front of Castel Nuovo. The block of the inn was demolished during the Risanamento; the spot is now at the entrance of the Galleria Umberto I.
