Torre Annunziata · The pergola by the sea
The strange, half unpleasant impression of the mummified city is washed away by a frugal meal under the arbour of a small inn by the sea. On the way back, cottages that are perfect copies of the Pompeian houses: the same life after so many centuries.

The strange, and in some degree unpleasant impression which this mummied city leaves on the mind, we got rid of, as, sitting in the arbour of a little inn close to the sea (where we dispatched a frugal meal), we revelled in the blue sky, the glaring ripple of the sea, and the bright sunshine; and cherished a hope that, when the vine-leaf should again cover the hill, we might all be able to pay it a second visit, and once more enjoy ourselves together on the same spot.
As we approached the city, we again came upon the little cottages, which now appeared to us perfectly to resemble those in Pompeii. We obtained permission to enter one, and found it extremely clean—neatly-platted rush-bottomed chairs, a buffet, covered all over with gilding, or painted with variegated flowers, and highly varnished. Thus, after so many centuries, and such numberless changes, this country instils into its inhabitants the same customs and habits of life, the same inclinations and tastes.

Den wunderlichen, halb unangenehmen Eindruck dieser mumisierten Stadt wuschen wir wieder aus den Gemütern, als wir, in der Laube zunächst des Meeres in einem geringen Gasthof sitzend, ein frugales Mahl verzehrten und uns an der Himmelsbläue, an des Meeres Glanz und Licht ergötzten, in Hoffnung, wenn dieses Fleckchen mit Weinlaub bedeckt sein würde, uns hier wiederzusehen und uns zusammen zu ergötzen.
Näher an der Stadt fielen mir die kleinen Häuser wieder auf, die als vollkommene Nachbildungen der pompejanischen dastehen. Wir erbaten uns die Erlaubnis, in eins hineinzutreten, und fanden es sehr reinlich eingerichtet. Nett geflochtene Rohrstühle, eine Kommode ganz vergoldet, mit bunten Blumen staffiert und lackiert, so daß nach so vielen Jahrhunderten, nach unzähligen Veränderungen diese Gegend ihren Bewohnern ähnliche Lebensart und Sitte, Neigungen und Liebhabereien einflößt.

We found there good and merry company from Naples; the men are perfectly natural and light-hearted. We took our dinner at the “Torre del’ Annunziata,” with our table placed close to the sea. The day was extremely fine. The view towards Castell a Mare and Sorrento, near and incomparable. My companions were quite rapturous in praise of their native place; some asserted that without a sight of the sea it was impossible to live. To me it is quite enough that I have its image in my soul, and so, when the time comes, may safely return to my mountain home.

Wir fanden gute, muntere neapolitanische Gesellschaft daselbst. Die Menschen sind durchaus natürlich und leicht gesinnt. Wir aßen zu Torre dell’ Annunziata, zunächst des Meeres tafelnd. Der Tag war höchst schön, die Aussicht nach Castell a Mare und Sorrent nah und köstlich. Die Gesellschaft fühlte sich so recht an ihrem Wohnplatz, einige meinten, es müsse ohne den Anblick des Meers doch gar nicht zu leben sein. Mir ist schon genug, daß ich das Bild in der Seele habe, und mag nun wohl gelegentlich wieder in das Bergland zurückkehren.
