Haina 1751 – Eutin 1829

German painter, in Rome from 1783, where he shares Goethe's lodgings on the Corso and paints the famous "Goethe in the Roman Campagna". In February 1787 he goes with him to Naples: with Tischbein, Goethe climbs Vesuvius, visits Pompeii and the city's collections, and receives his first judgements on its works of art. But Tischbein is absorbed by the court and his own projects, and he stays on in Naples; it is he who proposes the young Kniep as Goethe's companion for Sicily. In the following years he directs the Neapolitan Academy of Painting; back in Germany, he recounts that time in his memoir "Aus meinem Leben".
