British envoy to the court of Naples from 1764, archaeologist and scientist "of no small worth" according to Croce: he collects ancient vases and studies Vesuvius and the Phlegraean Fields. His house in Palazzo Sessa, at Cappella Vecchia, gathers all the people of taste and the foreign colony; from the corner room, Goethe writes, the view over the gulf is perhaps unique. It is he who, at Caserta, shows Goethe Emma Hart's "attitudes", holding the lamp for her.
