Hildesheim 1755 – Naples 1825

German draughtsman who, after a stay in Rome, had settled in Naples, "the very element of the landscape painter": Tischbein proposes him to Goethe as a constant companion. The agreement is simple: they will travel and live together, Kniep will draw, and the outlines will belong to Goethe. With him Goethe goes to Paestum and, from March to May 1787, to Sicily: on board ship Kniep draws the coasts, on land the temples and the ruins. On their return Goethe finds him lodgings, furnishes them and, on the eve of departure, drinks with him to their shared future; on 3 June, at the toll barrier of Naples, they say goodbye for the last time. Kniep remains in Naples until his death.
